Alopecia is an autoimmune disease which occurs when cells in your immune system surround and attack your hair follicles. This leads to the attached hair to fall out, meaning the more hair follicles that your immune system attacks, the more hair loss you will have.
Anyone can suffer from Alopecia, regardless of ethnicity, gender or age. There are also different types of Alopecia – from Alopecia Areata (patchy hair loss), to Alopecia Totalis (hair loss on entire scalp).
The amount of hair loss differs for everyone – cases can be mild with only small areas of hair loss – or more severe with total hair loss lasting a lifetime.
